|
I've always used a #10 for faces, but recently tried a little Tid-bit trimmer from Jeffers Pet, that uses a small blade that is very tight. I did not have great success and gave Theo a few nasty scratches. I felt terrible and ended up crying and in a terrible mood, feeling guilty for scratching him all up. ARGHH.
So, what can an amateur use to get a tighter clip than a #10 on the face, but not dangerously close? Please don't say Braun Contura because it cannot be found for any price!
Thanks for any tips. |

It's Wella Contura. If you google it, you will find lots of them still available, and from many different sources. They aren't cheap, but they are the best, imo! Especially on faces. |

I found a clipper I really like at Sally Beauty Supply that is very close to the Wella Contura. It is the same size, very quiet and inexpensive. It also works with or without a cord. I believe it was around $35. I had a Wella(note the word "had", it bit the dust) and found this to be very comparible. Hope this helps...
About forgot...the brand is Jilbere and it is pink My FAVORITE color! |

| Mari, what were you using with a # 10 blade? I think will start to use only a #10 on Lahti as she burns so quickly but my Oster is too big for her face. Do you have a smaller clipper with a 10 blade and do you mind my asking what kind it is? |

Whoa Nellie,
I'm just using my Andis w/ the #10 blade on it. I hate burning or nic'ing them, I just feel like poop after that. I'm gonna look into the other things mentioned, but may have to settle for the #10. I usually trim the face every bath (once a week) and at least that does keep it as short as a #10 can get it. |

| I have searched google for Wella Contura and there are NOT any available, brand new in the US. You might be able to find a used one on ebay or something, but the only new ones are from European sites and you cannot be sure that they will work with American currency (electric, that is). I've even sent my hair stylist to several "licensed stylist only" store to try to order one and no luck. |

Go to Sallys Beauty supply and get the Wahl Beret shaver. Very quiet and it is cordless. It runs $54.99 unless you have a Sallys card. So I paid $49.99 I LOVE IT. It also is a nice shaver for sideburns for the kids and hubby. They love it too and it does not pull or burn like the cheap ones. Good luck |

I took Sashpaw's suggestion and bought the Jilbere today at Sally (I hadn't read about the Braun yet so didn't even get a look at it). The Jilbere is really quiet and nice and it's adjustable so you can try your hand at doing a closer/tighter clip if you wish.
Thanks, Sashpaw! |

I'm totally going to go scope out my local Sally's now!
I bought a little Wahl mini clipper at WalMart, but it's actually louder than my large clippers and it heats up way too fast. I'm still really slow at shaving Hubble's face, and I need something that won't get hot to the touch in 2 minutes. Plus it doesn't trim very close, considering it's a sideburns/beard trimmer |

| I really like the Jilbere. I used it on the boys faces and it's quiet and does a nice job. I wouldn't use it for a full body trim or anything. Also, it does have the type of blade you can pop off and change. So, that's a draw back. But, I think for doing a few dogs faces/ears, if you keep it oiled and clean, it will last a long while. It was only $39.99. |

| I use the Wahl Mini Arco. It works really good, whether just on the girl's faces or for the entire body. I shave Jasmine with it weekly and did Daisy's pony cut with it. I'm sure I paid under $100 for it. |

I tried using that on Lahti with no luck, still a lot of razor burn. I really hate doing that to her and thought this trimmer would be ideal. Then again, could be the operator , though don't burn the others. |

I wonder if its just her face is just sensitive and its not the clippers? I say that because I can do Jasmine's entire body and face (well, I used to do her face before she turned into Cujo during the face clippings) with the mini arco and she never has any kind of reaction at all. No razor burn ever. Also, I do Daisy's pony cut with no problem, but that is with a small attachment because I dont want it down to the skin, and she is fine with that. But when I tried to do Daisy's face in the past without an attachment, she always got razor burn. No matter what kind of clippers I used. I stopped trying to go too close on her face because of that. If you find something that works better, please let me know so I can get rid of the fuzzy faces |

I don't even want to talk about how many other trimmers I have purchased and tried on Lahti's face. I am beginning to think will just let her be fuzzy too. |

The first time I clippered my puff's face I had major clipper burns. My clipper blade was sharp and not over heated. (I've been a groomer for over 30 years and watch for these things). His face had never been clipped and I figured it was just a reaction to the clipping. I now clip his face about every week or two, depending on the show schedule and have no problems. If I see any redness I use a little baby powder and in a day it is fine.

hmmmm..................I've just been using the hubby's beard trimmer, not sure of the brand but it works pretty good, just a little big for the faces. I'm gonna head to Sally Beauty in the am and get that little pink clipper!! |

I truly don't pretend to be an expert as I've only had Finli three weeks now. I've never clipped a dog before and was as nervous as everyone else to start but I figured if I did just little tiny bits at a time, we'd both get used to the process. I read everything I could find here on clipper recommendations and then decided to start off with a Walmart special...just to get used to trimming. I have no idea if the $19 Remington Titanium is noisy (no experience to compare to). I have no idea if it gets hot because we're doing such short sessions. But even as small as Finli is (she's just over 2 lbs right now), I think we're doing pretty well! Sure - you can see some choppy bits around her lips (check out the center of her chin). She fusses more when I get close there.
Because this is a man's grooming tool, it also came with a trimmer head that is supposed to be for noses and ears. It works great to get into those tiny spots where the larger blade won't fit.
Now if I can just figure out what to do about the tear stains...

For tear stains, the first thing I would check is the food. Beet Pulp or anything dark colored like that can show up as tear stains. Next thing is the water. Someone told me this, and it made a huge difference when I switched to bottled water. For my Daisy, they are sometimes caused by allergies. The vet gave us some eyedrops that help. There are also products you can buy, such as Angel Eyes or Eye Envy that are supposed to work well, but I prefer not to use them. |

Thanks Tammy - but I'm feeding beet-free food and she hasn't had a drop of anything but bottled water since she arrived. She had no hint of tear stain while at her breeder's home so we're guessing Omaha doesn't agree with her. We'll see what happens after she gets through the teething phase... |
