Retsina was four months old when I adopted her, and weighed a pound and a half. She was having daily diarrhea and vomiting, and not getting much benefit from her food despite the vets not being able to find any cause. It turned out to be a beef intolerance, and once I figured that out from tracking when she got ill and when she had a "good" day, she started growing and thriving.
When she was a little over a year, the vet we were using had another client who had been trying to delay their cat's spay because she was so tiny. She got out, got pregnant, and had seven kittens. This was too much for her to handle, and she weaned them too young. I took two kittens--and Retsina nursed them.
She's been a sweet, affectionate, wonderful cat for sixteen years. After her rough start, she became the picture of health. As recently as a year or so ago, whenever I took her to the vet, they'd ask if I was sure about her age--because she didn't show any signs, in physical exam or labs, of being even close to that age.
But in the last year or so she had started to fail. Kidney failure of course, that's all too typical of aging cats, but at first switching to KD put her right back in to the normal range.
In the last few weeks, though, she has been eating, drinking, using the litter box, and not vomiting any more than is normal for her (always more than for most cats), and yet she's been melting away.
I took her to the vet, expecting that it would be her thyroid. The vet said no, her liver is failing, and she has a tumor as well.
There were some treatment options, but they would have started with determining if the tumor was malignant, and the doctor felt that even if it was not, her liver was too far gone. There was no course forward that did not involve pain and distress for an elderly cat with no reserves left.
Up to this point, she had not been in pain. I could not make her suffer that pain and distress with no realistic prospect of successful treatment, just to hang on to her for a few weeks longer.
I chose to let her go this morning, going to sleep for the last time in my
arms.

Ohhh Lis, after 16 wonderful years together you held her as she went to the bridge. I have no doubt that she felt safe having you there, knowing that you made a selfless decision on her behalf, difficult as I am sure it was.
RIP Retsina
