Hi guys, me again Laughing you all must think I'm a bit hopeless, haha

How soon did you start walking your dogs? I put Velma in a bag, head out obviously till we got down the street (eventually ahe will be coming on the bus with me so I want to get her used to a bag) then put her on the ground with a harness on. She is 10wks old as previously stated, her last vaccine was at 8 wks, the next one is in about 10 days at 12 wks. We walked around a little on my street corner and I let her have a sniff, she went potty, we walked around on the same corner some more. Then we headed home, in the bag. I was careful not to let her eat any poop, she did sniff other dogs poo but like I said I was very vigilent in not letting her eat or lick it.

Is this an ok age for short outings like this? The whole thing took only about15 mins and she was much better this time than the last time I yook her out the front (ie not our yard). When did you all start taking your babies out? She starts puppy school next week, thought it would be nice for her to have a bit of exposure to going out before then so she is confident. Thoughts anyone? Very Happy

I don't claim to be an expert, but at the vets I used to work at (and the vets before that), we used to tell people not too let their dogs walk around outside before they had their 2nd vaccine. Once the course was finished, they could do what they want.
I think taking her in the bag is ok though Smile

Taking her out and about in the carrier is good for her, as she can see the world from a safe place. Putting her on the ground is a no no untill her vaccines are complete. Under no circumstances should she be sniffing other dogs poop or pee. These are the very carriers of the diseases that can kill her, and she needs full protection before going anywhere near them. Rats also pee round lamp posts, street corners and bins. They also carry leptospirosis, one of the deadly diseases covered by the vaccines.

More dogs die of euthanasia, in shelters, than of all communicable diseases, combined. More dogs are surrendered to shelters for "behavior problems" than any other cause. Socialization is #1 in my household. Of course, you can be smart about it.

She should certainly not be sniffing poop, or pee (mail boxes, lamp posts, flower pots) or attending dog parks, but she SHOULD be playing with safe, vaccinated dogs that belong to friends and family as often as possible. She should be meeting as many people of all shapes, sizes, disabilities, who speak with all different sorts of accent, that you can find. She should be touching as many different surfaces as possible (grass, hardwood, tile, varieties of carpet, sand, pebbles, large rocks, etc).

It sounds a little silly, but it makes a well balanced dog that doesn't have fears of new beings or objects.

I start taking my pups out after their first shots - at 8 weeks. Not neccessarily with other dogs, but with people, kids, places, schools, etc. It makes them confident, not timid, & easier to show. The 2nd & 3rd shots are boosters .. they do have initial immunization. (after all we take our human babies out before their whole course is done) If my pups meet other dogs it's ones that have had shots. I've been told the 8-12 weeks period is crucial for socialization. If you don't want to show your dog, then maybe it's not such a big deal & you should wait. We like the uber confident ones for the showring Smile

I dont want to show her but i do want to take her out with me and not have her be frightened. Today I am meeting hubby at the tram stop cause my course is tonight. I am taking her with me in the carrier so she is not alone in the house and to experiance traffic from afar, also the tram which will be prob a little scary for her. Then hubby will bring her home. My yard actually has no grass, we plan to get a little for her, perhaps today I will put her on a nature strip that is poop free just for 5 mins so she has a brief experiance of grass.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think i'll keep the proper walks till she has had her second vaccine. Smile
