Memory Stones
About ten years ago, my first pet who passed here was just a nightmare experience making the final arrangements, amongst which was finding a headstone. I fiddled with some neat ideas and came across a rather nice design, which I believe i have shared her before... But I digress. Some time ago as I was discussing the pups with my sister, I had thought to make memory stones for the pups which could be used as grave markers when the time came. When we were kids, any concrete poured at the family home had all our handprints AND pawprints along with names in it..... Not to be morbid, but we know it's going to happen and making a stone every time and waiting for it to set up, etc.... well. I just thought having my pooches name at the door along with my Cave Canem sign would be nice and have a duel purpose. So, of course I put it on the back burner of projects to do....
But since I had to order Babes letters (her marker is there along a certain orchid path, but will be replaced with this one) and I went ahead and ordered everyone here.... Made the stones according to their personalities. It's easy, just clear caulk solid brass letters to pavers of your choice (I happen to have a bunch of them from another project). This spot on the other side of the front entry I found has room for exactly 8 markers ontop of the pavers already there but around the potted plant, even though I would have preferred a place the pups don't whiz on all the time!!!
I hope you like them and might think about making a few, something similar or get creative, for your special kids. I just finished the last three so you can see here it is still white and hasn't dried yet how the caulk is applied. When I get them put in the entry outside will post a pic. I like to let them REALLY set up in the house first since this is humid Florida.
Xoli - miss silly
Albi - planting the flag - MINE
Elmo - arising to his crestiness (his birthday is the epiphany)
Mojito - on garde
Enrigue - high energy/squeal
Calivn - so GQ
Dulce - even keeled, calm, serene
Giz - larger than life, rolling doggie dance
and Babe - just one classy gal |

Those are beautiful! what a great idea and so simple
this is way better than the wooden cross I have in our front yard for our Jessie, wouldn't look so much like a graveyard |

| Very clever idea. However, we do the cremation route since we move too often. Hopefully, the next place will be a bit more permanent and I'd love to do remembrance type stones (or bricks) like this. Thanks for the idea! |

Oh wow those are really cool. Several years ago when I was managing a small elderly apartment building one of my residents had a friend of hers make me name bricks of all my pets at that time. But the bricks and things were all made by this person and she used something to imprint the letters into the cement. I have been trying to find a kit somewhere to be able to do them again as I screwed up and left them out over the winter one year and most of them cracked and broke into pieces.
I really like this idea though because I do these myself. I have always thought that I would love to do a sort permanent wall installation using the name bricks but I never know if I will ever sell this house or not. |

That is a wonderful idea and I love it. I would do something like this now too as well as later.
They came out so unique for each dog, Hlboyz. |

Thanks everyone. The first one I did some 10 years ago still looks very nice even though I have to periodicaly blow yard debris off of them when I do the shell paths.... so they hold up well, and hopefully for a long long time (50 year caulk anyone?) I actually was at the checkout line in the garden dept of Home Depot with a bag of cement to make the first marker and saw the pavers . Finding brass letters was the initial sticking point as I looked everywhere, finally found them online and still can (just a heads up on that part). The larger letters have holes for the screws, so I just cut the ends off - and bought solid brass screws separately to be sure they won't rust - and caulk them into the little holes. Still, really easy to do!
I can't wait to put them in the entry! And put the finishing touches on Babes resting place as well. |

| What a lovely idea. So easy to do too. I have my babies cremated because i can't bear to think of them in the cold ground. Silly really i suppose. These would make lovely memorials placed in the flower beds or round the "fairy garden". |

hlboyz,
Those are the nicest markers I have ever seen. What a great way to honor your kids.
You have inspired me to create my own memory markers.
Thank you for sharing these with us. |
