Our puff (Shanghai) killed a chipmunk yesterday. I don't know whether to be grateful or horrified.
Shanghai was outside when I looked out the window to see our 17 year old cat closing in on a chipmunk that got trapped in our entryway. Shanghai heard the commotion, pushed past the cat and dashed in and killed it like it was part of his job description!
Shang is 8 years old and perennially obsessed with chasing any and all rodents, but for all his interest, he's not been successful. This is the first time I've actually seen him catch one! He didn't try to eat his trophy (thank goodness), but he didn't want me to take it away either. I had to chase him for a while to get it away.
The chipmunks are a real problem in my garden (they undermine our retaining wall and eat my tomatoes), so I'm glad the little stinker is gone. But there are plenty more where that one came from.
Our first crested, Beijing, was also obsessed with chasing rodents. He caught and killed a mouse once and also killed a chipmunk that the (same) cat caught, brought in through the cat door and dropped (apparently unharmed) on the floor in front of him.
Are all cresties into hunting like this? Do they all need feline help? Are there terrier genes in their background? |

They were known as ratters in years past.... Some have a higher prey drive than others tho. Mine don't hunt that much but I did pupsit a delicate little crestie who killed a squirrel within the first week she was here. I swear I would never have believed it! |

| Tucker loves to get after squirrels and has come awfully close to getting them a couple times. I pray he never does. I will be so horrified. I love squirrels. Rambler tries as well, but he can't get the type of speed Tucker can. Peyton just plan don't care. All that matters to him is momma is with him. Oh Tucker is the only cc in that group. I sometimes forget newer ppl don't know that lol |

Ena loves all creatures. I'm serious. Cats, dogs, birds, FISH, snakes, lizards, rodents, rabbits. She kisses them, and snuggles them, and plays with them. I regularly allow her to "babysit" ferrets while I'm grooming them. She LOVES that!
Emma, the PRT, not so much. She likes cats. And certain dogs, and a few people. Everything else can go to... well, anywhere else, as far as she's concerned. She kills rodents, rabbits, and birds (I've seen her leap 6 feet for a bird) on a fairly regular basis. I've even seen her catch minnows. |

| Well funny that you should ask that question because my Abby and Angel killed a mole the other day. I don't think they were really trying to kill him but instead play with him but they got too rough. Abby kept pawing at him because he was making this high pitched squeaking noise and she was picking him up but then when he would squeal or I guess move in her mouth she would toss him and she was acting like she was freaked out that he was doing that but all that tossing and pawing finally killed him. But Angel LOVES to chase birds, squirrels, chipmunks basically anything that moves but I am not sure if she is chasing as in "the hunt" or she is chasing because she is playing. With the exception of the mole they have never gotten close enough to anything to actually catch it. |

Same here -- funny this topic comes up today! Today, sweet sweet little scaredy cat Cesar, the little sweet puppy became ALL MAN today - he killed a mole. He didn't just kill it either, he ripped it's poor little head off and was chewing on it!!!!!! All quicker than a blink of an eye and before I could even get to him!!! I finally got to him, screaming like a wild banshee, and he dropped the remains. Poor mole never stood a chance. I got latex gloves and picked him up and buried him.
Cesar.....strutting his stuff the whole rest of the afternoon. |

Oh yeah, I can never forget the day I came home to let the dogs out and looked out the door after they had been out for a few minutes to see Toui chowing down heartily on a freshly killed tree rat. He was holding it between his front paws like it was corn on the cob and when I went out to take it away from him it was still warm.
Yuck!
I have also found a dead squirrel here, and he came running to the door a couple of nights ago with a dead bird, though it was obviously dead for a while. I can't say if those were his kills (we also have a cat) but he relentlessly seeks prey in the trees that border our yard, so it would not be surprising. |

| Mice here and in Arizona have been known to literally slalom through my dogs' legs with no interest from the dogs... My Doxie however did take out a rat once. Clean kill, fortunately did not try to prevent me from interfering with anything further happening to it, but yes has strutted around ever since, and that was 8 years ago! |

| Rambo has zero prey drive and Rocky only "hunts" bugs.... Unless you're a really big ant, it's all good here! (But I have to keep a close watch on him as he's zeroed in on bees a couple of times - I managed to kill the bees before he could kill/be stung first)... |

Wookie will "hunt" the chickens but only if he has an audience of canine back-up, if he's standing on his own and one of the chikens gets over the fence right in front of him he backs off and lacks confidence to get too close
I find all my CC's prefer to hunt in a pack rather than on their own but having seen them in hunt mode i would still not trust them to be around the birds un-supervised They haven't had the opportunity to hunt any other type of animal as we live in town and apart from birds we don't see any other wildlife. |

Peggy kills mice, moles, & one little snake. The puff boys could care about any kind of prey.

| my JRT is the huntress, but the little girls have been catching those little white moths in the yard. ( or are they butterflies?) they pounce on them. i would never yell at my girls for hunting. it's sort of in their nature. i'm used to it after 14 yrs of JRTs |

Thanks for all the feedback. It's interesting to know that at least some cc don't have this huge prey drive. I was kind of suspecting that all CC are born killers after watching my 2 boys in action over the years.
We first suspected Beijing might have "dishonorable intentions" toward small fuzzing things when Beijing was just a couple of years old. We had a hamster then and put it in one of those hampster balls to show Beijing, thinking he would sniff it and maybe roll it around a bit. But he instantly tried very seriously to dismantle the ball to get at that totally coveted furry thing inside. It was obvious that he really was going to do it serious damage if he ever got hold of the hampster. We took extra precautions so that the hampster would never accidentally escape and end up in harms way. Luckily, the hampster did live out his life and died of natural causes.
Neither one of my boys ever "played" their catches to death like abbybuttons kids. Both Beijing and Shanghai killed anything they catch within seconds - it's like they were trained assassins all their lives, even the first time.
We always thougth of Beijing (our first hairless) as sort of the "wuss dog" until he dispatched that first chipmunk that the cat brought in. Beijing cornered the chipmunk in the bedroom, snatched him up and crunched his body back and forth like an ear of corn. Then Beijing just dropped him - all within a couple of seconds. I think Beijing broke every bone in that chipmunk's body and it was dead before it hit the floor. Sorry this story is so gross and graphic, but I've never been able to compare notes about this with other crested owners before. My jaw just dropped when it happened the first time.
And now Shanghai has shown this same killer instinct. He's not related to Beijing at all. Thank goodness both of them were basically incompetent if enthusiastic hunters. The only time Shanghai spends any length of time outside the house is when he has a line on a chipmunk in the garage or a squirrel in the tree. He's a tireless hunter and difficult to distract. Beijing was the same way.
Our 17 year old cat, Figaro, is basically retired from most hunting now, but he used to catch 2 - 3 rodents a week. Someone dumped Figaro in the country near our house when he was about a year old . I'm not sure how long he was on his own, but he was declawed and neutered. He didn't know how to hunt at first (it took him about a year to figure out how to catch mice without claws). Figaro was starving and was just skin and bones when we found him and took him in.
It's nice to know that not all cc have killing rodents at the top of their "to do" list.

My little crew love to hunt-but then I lure course many of them too.
Bindi has caught chipmunks-mice- even a small rabbit. Izzi-Itty Bitty-Jenna and Latte have all had their share of chipmunks and mice. They never eat them-thank god!- just shake and shake until I take them away. |

Your Stan sounds like my Louis - maybe it's a boy thing, as my Daisy wouldn't chase a bird if it stole her food from under her nose |

Ruby my thl, is about driven nuts by squirrls (ha, no pun intended) The sound of them, the looks of them, the smell of them she goes "right to ground" and takes off in pursuit. Even when we are on the golf cart riding around at the cottage and she hears one, she is straining to see where it is in the woods etc.
Pipp is yet again another story. I swear to god, one could come up to her and say "hold this nut please" and she would She has no interest what so ever. However, we have discovered, that a "dragon fly" is not safe in her midst. I guess she is just trying to slay the dragon for her Queen

we don't have much around our house, as Sam, the golden retriever, keeps it clear. He will hunt...he has killed a mockingbird, one accidentally by playing too hard, the other on purpose, as it was divebombing him. He has snatched squirrels out of the air...
Max apparently also will hunt, given the oppurtunity...he about ripped my arm off one day during a walk, a squirrel went flashing by and he was after it. would have gotten it too if his leash had been about a foot longer. As for killing what he catches, I know he has killed several stuffies in the year we have had him!! I toss, he runs, grabs, shakes, drops...so I feel pretty confident that if he ever ran across anything, he would "seek and destroy".... |
