Dear Crushers,
I have been asked by a neighbor to make them some bread & butter pickles. I am not a stranger to canning or making jellies & preserves, but I have never done pickles. I have my granma's recipe, but I was wondering if any of you have done this before, and if you have a recipe you really like?
Help,
Signed,
In A Pickle

Well, I started making them today. I don't have a bowl big enough so I had to use a litter box. It's never been used, and I think it's a plastic dishpan but it looks like a litter box. They are in the frig overnight, then I'll put them up tomorrow. |

I made the pickles. Thank goodness for a measurement guide. You know you're in trouble when the recipe calls for gallons & quarts of ingredients.
Here's the pickles soaking in ice before cooking.
Some of the cukes were too big for pickles, so I made a relish too.
We have 5 quarts & 3 1/2 pints of pickles, and 16 1/2 pints of relish!
I still have a lot of jars left, so I bet my neighbor brings more cucumbers. But maybe not, if these aren't any good. I keep thinking of an Andy Griffith episode where Aunt Bee made horrible pickles. OMG, I hope I'm not Aunt Bee! |

Those pickles look great. Hope they're delicious. I have a great bread and butter recipe somewhere in storage. It called for liming the cuke slices, and boy did they turn out crispy and delicious. |

They turned out pretty good! Next time I'll put a tad more sugar in. When they are cooled in the frig, they are pretty tasty on a hot summers day. |
