I was wondering how often it was advisable to trim Mojito's nails? I am thinking of getting the Peticure thingy. Has anyone tried it? I am very, very squeamish when it comes to their nails. I wondered about the device....like, why couldn't you almost as easily file to the quick if you didn't know what you were doing?

Mojito has a thing about his right paw - won't let anyone touch it hardly. I know something must have happened in his past.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I think it is a universal crestie trait to have a thing about their paws. None of mine like to have their front paws touched at all and Hawk squeals like he is being tortured. He sounds like a singing pig. Rolling Eyes or something along those lines.

Does he have his front dew claws? If so, be sure to keep them very short as they can break off and are very painful when this happens.

We trim when they look too long or I can hear them on the wood floor. You want the paw pad to be flat on the ground and the nails not interfering with walking. Don't hit the quick but don't be surprised if he doesn't like anything you do with those front paws. It is in the Crestie Handbook to keep your hands off of them!

Oh....I see. I don't have the heart (OK - nerve) so to the groomer he will go!!!! He hasn't had it done since he was neutered a couple of months ago so I guess it is time.

Thanks!

If you put Peticure in the search function, you will see a recent thread about it. I have it & like it, it would be hard to hurt your crestie with it.

That is a different brand, but looks very similar. I know some on this forum have waited a very long time to get their PetiCure as they were on back order & couldn't keep up with the number of orders they had. They may have resolved this problem by now though. I have the Peticure petite.

I try to do nails at least every week or two. If you dog is sensitive to having his feet handled. Pick up the foot, and gently massage it. Do this a LOT. Every time you pet the dog, handle the feet. At first you may only be able to pick up the foot, but keep at it. I use both a nail clipper and a Dremel electric grinder. I find I can do the job much quicker with a nail clipper. If you can't do the nails yourself, I would have a groomer do it about once a month.

I just ordered the Peticure and can't wait to get it. I do nails every 10-14 days. I have one who hates, hates, hates it and makes it a real chore, but it must be done.

it has been a while since I got Jack's nails cut, I don't dare do it myself either. I went about 2 weeks in between nail cuttings before that and the lady said his nails weren't long enough, the quick was right there. from walking him it files down the nails a bit. the only thing is he has his dew claws and they grow quick, and i still don't dare do it myself. I think i am going to get the peticure as well!!

Haley my rescue was like that when I got her so I just cut one nail a day everyday the first few times
it was like ...cut nail... treat everyday until I cut all tn so it took a period of 10 days

now after like 7 months she tolerates the nail cutting like a pro she just stays still for all ten and knows she will be getting a sweet treat at the end of it BUT I remind you it took like 7 or 8 months to get her to that point but it was worth it Wink

I dremel nails once a week - I don't have the peticure attachment though. I find it's easier to get nails nice and short without pinching or hurting the quick. If you do hit the quick with a grinder, it bleeds maybe a tiny drop, nothing like what you get when you quick a dog with clippers.

What I do is take Hubble for a nice walk, feed him, then dremel his nails. I sit in the corner of the couch and firmly wedge his body in between myself and the arm, and gently pull out the leg I want to work with. He still fusses, but he can't HURT himself this way. It's actuallty pretty quick once you get the hang of it, and if you do it once a week you never really have too much to grind down.

I do use clippers for his dewclaws, since I haven't been able to figure out a good angle to get at them with the dremel. I'm still used to giant greyhound dews, not these tiny little nubs Hubble has!

I clip my 2 girls nails every 2 weeks, along with my Sphynx cats nails as well. Elvis needs his done only once a month. His nails have always grown slower, and he wears them down some runnning around the back yard.

Not their favorite part of grooming for sure! But it must be done! Laughing
