|
In my research for a new pup, one breeder shared with me many pics of HLs she's bred when they were pups, adolescents and then adults. I was shocked how different they looked from where they started out. If you had scattered the pics and said "match them up" I'd a had no clue where to begin. Important lesson learned for me, if you fall in love with the "look" of a hl pup, remember that's not what he's gonna look like later. My husband loves this little red-head pup, the breeder sent pics of others that were similar looking as pups and then what they look like now - not redheads anymore, hardly recognizable.
I suppose in the case of the more black/white spotted types, maybe it stays more constant looking??? |

The puffs change drastically too! Indy was born a black, tan and white tri! I bet you never would have guessed that!
Toby had alot more red as a puppy, too.
That's why, even though you may really like a look or coloring, you need to go with the temperament and personality of the dog you really like, because looks can change... ! |

My Morgan was a redhead as a wee pup. You could see, tho, at the very roots, it was blond. Sure enough, the red grew out and she became a blondie. Now it's changing back to reddish! Skin colour usually remains true to the birth skin, with the exception of the whities... they'll get the spots and it's anyone's guess how much they fill in.
But, look at the roots is my advice. That'll let you know if the hair colour is going to change much. I was shocked. Here's the example:
Morige at 7 weeks:
and a month later:
you can see the roots growing out.
And at a year- much blonder than now, actually:
and now:
almost back to reddish:

Wow! Isn't that something? She was adorable as a pup and she's stunning as an adult. It's not that they don't stay really pretty, they do. But, I think a good breeder has to make sure to tell inexperienced people about this "metamorphisis" |

It's true, was thinking about people who want a white pup and getting one that starts out getting just a few spots and then fills in almost completely! I pretty much agree with everyone else, I don't care that much really. If someone wants a particular color they probably should adopt an older adult! The exception is probably a palomino? Even the solid black may start silvering....
That is wild the changes - Morgan is almost a golden, hmm "strawberry blonde' on top? Albi is very peachy blonde, his mom was an apricot puffer, while Mojito retained his true red - very red - furnisihings, from 9mo-1.5 yrs to today. I have no idea what they looked like as puppies tho! |

If there's another breed of dog that changes this much in color, hairless or not, I'm not aware of it. (Which of course proves nothing. )

Krissy (HHL) was a bright shiny strawberry blond when younger. She has now faded in color considerably. I can't believe the difference in her either!
Hawk so far has remained the same as he was at 5 months old and now in color and Holly as well.
So I always go for temperament and the cuddle factor cause that is what is important to me A pup who loves me and wants to be close to me is my ideal dog any day |

I'd just groomed her, and I was still learning how.

Bambi was black tan and some white here and there .The tan turn white! In the summer her coat turn a bit brown if she's out in the sun.So sun is a factor too!

wow girls, I have learned so much from you today!!! My new puppy is mostly all black with a white ring around his neck and white "socks" and a wee bit of white at the end of his tail. I'd just assumed he'd stay that way - to hear the colors change so much is like getting a christmas present - not quite certain what you're gonna get but it's sure to be terrific! LOL!
Thanks for enlightening this new crested rookie! |

| It's so weird how they change it really hits people off guard. When I first got Scooby he was slate w/ white furnishings and when he was about 2 he started getting strawberry blonde highlights. And his chest was pink now it's white with slate spots. I just love it. |
