so I have the WORST time keeing my puff Bailey in full coat. She is a nightmare with mats. I have tried alot of stuff and am afraid I am actually damaging her coat in my attempts to get out mats she gets She has a gorgeous coat and although I have debated shaving her I just hate to do it. But she is soo much work and never a truly great result, and with five here it is a bit much. SO.......I am breaking down and taking her to the groomer this am. I really like the place, everyone is soo friendly and it is set up so well. Both family and friends take their dogs there and I have been to drop off and pick up for them and they are so loving etc. I went and had a long conversation with the gal who will be doing Bailey because the whole issue has always been that she has major stranger anxiety. She does not like strangers period. When someone she does not know well, may have met before but not a regular, or a stranger comes into our home she runs and barks and if someone were to corner her or pick her up she will snap. When out and about she is fine as long as noone attempts to mess with her. She was this way when I took her in as a foster, severly so, and has just never entirely gotten over it. We do have alot of company and go alot so she has gotten better but it is probably always going to be there IMO. That said, I was very concerned about how this would work while at a groomers with strange people trying to handle her???????? The gal was very understanding and said I was welcome to stay with her and reassure her etc the entire time which surprised me as my biggest turnoff in most cases is that they usually insist you CANNOT stay. Next we are starting small, just a bath and brush, I will shave her face and ears myself this am before I take her in. Also they said they will only do what she can handle and not push her. We will do this in baby steps. I would LOVE to get her to the point where she knows them and they can take care of her major grooming for me plus it might be good for her in the long run. My fingers are crossed this works out well and am hoping for a gorgeous mat free coat later this afternoon

I am glad they are receptive and you are going to be able to help her learn to enjoy spa day. I have done the same thing with some of my dogs. One of which was a rescue who would also fear bite, and she is now very good about going to the groomers. Another thought, would she feel better if one of her siblings was there with her? My dogs usually go in "batches" . I think it makes it a little easier when they see their friends getting the spa treatment as well, especially if you have another dog who is very laid back about the whole thing. My rescue that only has one eye actually bit the groomer's asst one day, and even though that person is now gone, I always stay when that dog is done and hold her while she is trimmed. Although she has a big attitude and I think my presence may be more of a "don't you dare" than as an assurance . |

I think it will do her a world of good to be handled by other people. But I know what you mean, the first time is eeeeek, will she regress or progress..... Poor Xoli has has so many veterinary/diagnostic procedures to date it has been good for her socially though, so I can see where it might be good even if it is grooming vs vetting.
Fingers crossed she will surprise you and be the perfect client |

Good Luck. I think it could happen.
I drop Polly off at day care and she was very afraid at first, but now she loves Nancy and will run to get inside. Polly has the same reaction to people that come to our house, she hides and Barks, but she has never snapped at anyone. It makes me so sad that some of these little angels are so afraid of people. |

Well lo and behold.....she actually did really well I'm soo happy. She was terrified at first. As soon as we tried to go in she panicked then once inside she started pawing the front door to get back outside while I was checking her in. The groomer was so slow and gentle with her....she couldn't pick her up at first but Bailey let me hand her to her ok....I hung back and watched and eventually even left as she was doing fine. They had her for more than four hours as they just kept taking her out and walking her, petting her, doing a little, then putting her back to rest then starting the process again but by the end she was fine with her! I'm soo excited it really was a good thing for her and you can bet she will be going back LOL She looks great and totally soft and mat free whoop whoop.
Bailey nice and clean (Mom, no pics please!)
Ok one smile
Ugghhh all that hair!

| Thanks all! Yes I have been tempted to clip her on MANY occasions but my heart just isn't in it and now with this working so well I will for sure keep her in coat. It makes it so much easier for me to just brush her each day, doesnt take long with her coat so nice then my plan is once a month to groomer and we will see if she needs more than that....the little tomboy! LOL I was very pleased with their handling of her as well as the job they did...yea! |

She looks great Marie! I'm glad you found a groomer who would work with you and make her feel comfortable with the process.
I know what it means to deal with those full coats! Rufus had some vet stuff recently that lead me to cut the boys coat length down, so it's a little easier to care for but I love the look of a dog in full coat! In my experience having the right tools can really make a difference. If you want I can share what things I have that make it easier to care for those coats! It looks like you have a good plan going! |
