Here is little Simone 35 days into her pregnancy. I apologize for teh poor quality pic - can't find my good camera anywhere . She carries her pups typically and as you can see she's lost her tuck up completely now- only 28 days to go Of course she might look alot better if her mommy stacked here up correctly too .

| This is her 2nd litter. Chelsey's Bayden and Laura's Tango were 2 pups in her first litter. |

She is so pretty I bet she enjoys belly rubs right about now!
If Niya's not careful and doesn't stop being such a piggy she'll lose her "tuck" too |

She's so pretty. She just has this look like she'd love to kick back in a hammock and take it easy. Heheh.

Actually, I find it varies by momma.
Simone's mom, Maude always refused to eat anything but canned food after 4 weeks along, but acted as if nothing was any different until delivery day. Once labor started she was in my lap no matter where I went. So needless to say she delivered 2 litters in my lap .
Simone gets more and more clingy as she gets further along in her pregnancy and spends more and more time flipped on her back - tummy up. She like her mom prefers to deliver in my lap it seems . |

They all sniff at her back side more often as if she were in season-so I'm sure she gives off different odors than usual at this time with all of the changes going on inside her.
Other than that they all act the same as they usually do with her day in and day out - don't seem to cut her any more slack than usual. The REAL changes start once the puppies arrive-whole other ball game for everyone then-absolutely fascinating. |

| On average how many pups are usually born to cresteds, I heard that they have smaller litters than lots of other breeds... is this true or just a myth? |

my question is, how do the other bitches treat her/the babies once pups come? I have heard horror stories about "outside" bitches killing entire new litters and dragging pups through baby gates and all that stuff.
What have you noticed? Do you keep her completely separate from everyone else once she goes into labor? Once the pups are born, how long does she need to stay separate w/ her babies? Do you introduce the new puppies to the pack the same way one would w/ any new arrival in their home?
sorry for all the questions.
i am quite obviously NOT a breeder! |

Don't worry Simone, many of us loose our 'tuck up' when preg. Yes, how many pups typically to Crested litters? What is her normal weight and what is her expected weight at whelping? Do Cresteds differ in any way from other toy breeds durring their preg. or delivery? Any Crested problems or special things you watch for in this breed?
Thanks,
Paula

I have had single pup litters and up to 5 pupps in a litter. Some breeders I know of have have 7/8 in a litter quite regularly. I would say 3-5 is the norm in the breed.
Luckily Cresteds are wonderful natural breeders(no need for SI and rarely AI) and free- whelpers, although c-sections are always a possibilty at any time with any breed of dog. Being toys, hypoglycemia and maintaining body temp are always a concern. This is why I always use a heated pad with my litters all of the time and check on pups every 2 hours the first 3 days they are born and every 4 hours days 5-10( for weight gain/nursing-body temp,etc)- which are the most critical times for newborns. |

As far as mommy treatment question:
Based on my cresteds and dane experiences, I really believe a lot of maternal instincts are hereditary. With the cresteds I've had absolutlely wonderful mom's.
Simone is a carbon copy of her mom, Maude(shipstones over the hill) and all I do during whelping is change the soiled towels as she goes along and declaws at 3 days of age. My Latte was the same way as well. They all break the amniotic sacks, cut the umbilical cords, and lick away until the pups are squirming away. They have all been great about taking care of stimulating/ingesting puppy waste until weaning time too-keeping spotless welping boxes. Some momma's don't do this and humans must take over and do every 2-4 hours or pupps will die.
In general for first time mom's I would watch really closely to make sure they do all of these things in a timely manner or else pupps could be lost.
I leave my girls in their own room for the first ten days and then in the kitchen, but gated off from all other dogs from then on until pupps are weaned.
Simone lets her mom-grandma Maude sit by her during labor and even lets her come in and out of the whelping box at will. Maude will continue to "clean" her pups and her daughter's pups even when they are 4-5-6 months old if they let her |

Wow, sounds like a lot of nights with little sleep for you!
Curious do you do the dew claws yourself??? or a Vet does them?
My hubby's step-dad used to breed Dobermans many many years ago and he did them himself I don't think I could have stomached that personally |

It gets pretty exhausitng with no the little sleep schedule, but its worth it.
I do my own declaws. I be showing you guys what i do when i do them. Cresteds are so nice and easy compared to Danes. |
