|
Georgie is getting neutered on Mar 17. In the 2 months he has really started "marking" in the house ...he wears a bellyband & it's full in an hour. He never used to pee in it all, it was there just incase ...I knew he would grow up eventually. Anyway his marking started after he was around some girls in heat (at Christmas when he was at the kennel).
I'm wondering what everybody's experience is with neutering ..does it really stop the marking? Or is this a habit now? I'm just not too optimistic about it He's good when we're at a hotel, there is no pee scent in our house - the boys always wear bellybands. He just turned one year old - I think I really suck at housebreaking ...so I can't imagine this would work for me. No matter, he's not being bred, so no need for the "boys" anymore

My experiences have been divided, but I think each case depends on a lot of things. My last 2 male dogs (Boomer - poodle, Teddy - puffer) were both neutered around age 3, and both continued marking in the house. They were both the only dog in the house, and Teddy's marking eased up a lot once we moved in to a new house. Stewie (beagle) was neutered at age 5 and he has completely stopped marking at home, but when we visit my bf's mom's house he will mark. She has 2 labs and Stewie will go wherever they have peed. She is obsessive about getting rid of the scent, but he still finds it.
Sorry I'm not more help! |

| I also have mix results. But if it does not really stop it sure does slow it down Mine would start up with a new foster but last few years I always have a new foster LOL My boys seem to have gotten selective in there older years they mostly mark the things that the fosters use so we put all crates beds that foster use in the study and keep the door closed it has helped then they started peeing in their food bowls so we keep everything up and out of there reach it has slowed it and the pee bands seem to be clean 70% of the time. Huge difference for me. |

| Toui was neutered not long before he came to me. I know Sue kept him in belly bands, and the very first thing he did to greet his new home was to lift his leg. However, that all stopped after about two weeks and he has not tried to mark anything in a very long time. I think it must help, but the habit probably takes a little time to go away, as well. |

he hasn't been doing it long since he's so young ... so I'm hoping he'll be good! He gets neutered on wed. I wish I would have neutered him before he started doing it

I think neutering takes the edge off but no - it will not stop the marking if the boy or girl is going to mark IMO. Pack dynanics plays such a big part here in that. I have the two crestie boys in nappies and that isn't going to change anytime soon, maybe ever. Out of 8, I am not complaining!
With these two neutered boys (at 9 months to a year old) it is all about dominance. Elmo never marked or peed in the house after initial potty training until Albi lost his vision - who started marking again - and he was the tyrant in training. Now he is the worst and never without a bellyband. Small dog syndrome in a sea of bigger boys so.... Albi well I just don't care what he does at this point but sure as heck, now that he is sleeping in the big bed (the throne) he is hiking everywhere right in front of me, getting caught and wagging his tail... Haha MOM... I'M KING I'M KING! When he first came here he slept with me and it was all about competing with ME and taking over the house.... and we had settled that situation a long time ago... Nappy on and no worries.
(as an interesting aside, when traveling Albi always got to sleep with me then and never marked never wore a belly band. it was only an at home issue with my bed and bedroom at the top of the house and solved almost instantaneously when he started sleeping downstairs in his own bed. Something to think about for sure when dealing with this issue.)
I wish I could say it would take care of the problem but I suspect it might depend on the pack dynamics in the house too. Are you going to get your Portie? It will be interesting to see how that affects things. I have had much older rescue dogs newly desexed who did not mark and also pupsat dogs here who marked in their home but not here. None of the dogs wear nappies when crated and do not soil their crates either. It must be nuetral territory since they do not have a specific crate to use! |

My dogs don't mark away from home either. Kenny is the worst, & he is the top dog, I never thought Georgie would contest that .. but I guess he is I'm okay with the bellybands, I'm just hoping things will change. Georgie sleeps with our daughter & Kenny sleeps in his crate & Peggy sleeps in our bed. We are getting the portie in april, he's a boy - so I'm getting bigger bellybands for him. I'll give him a chance though, I never had marking problems with our drever boys - and some lived with Kenny too (the pee king).

Some years back I had my four hl rescue boys who were being iffy and wearing nappies off and on.... and there were already some pack dynamics going on with Albi's decrease in vision.... when I pupsat an older rescue CC boy while his mom found a new rental... and who was very much the marker and who even challenged the alpha in his former foster home. After a couple of days in belly bands (all) everyone settled in beautifully and for the next few months NO ONE WORE NAPPIES. Golden.... Bliss! The whole crew just chilled. I was soooo sorry to see him go home!
Hmmm, maybe your portie will be your ace in the hole!!! |
