|
Over the past couple of months there has been an appliance revolt in our house the newest member to join was the kettle, I'm sure the old fridge and washing machine love the company of their newest revelutionary member, it's a bloody consipracy I tell ya
Anyway trudged off to the shop gripping my old kettle and my reciept and expecting a new one in exchange (still in warranty you see) well wouldn't you know it the lass says 'this one isn't still availbable' I says 'not surprising if it goes wrong really' so we can offer an equivalent replacement so I said okay, box duly arrives I toddle off home and it's a staineless steel one instead of plastic but I figure no problem I can cope, well I did as the book said and boiled it the requist times to get rid of the manufacturing dust and oils etc and it's bloody awful, great design easy to fill easy to see how much is in it lovely to pour from and boils water well (always a plus with a kettle) but and this is a big butt it makes the water taste like TCP I've looked into this and apparently its a reaction with chemicals in the water and the plastic/rubber they use to seal the water level thingy. Grrrr. I've rung them up and they said it's not the kettle it's the water and with time it should clear up....so I asked well if it's the water how in the hell will time affect it... they didn't have an answer to that. So here I am using filtered water and getting the same results so I've resorted to using a pan as the taste was making me heave.
Himself just handed me some distilled water and said if it is the chemicals reacting this should cure it and finally a half decent cuppa. *phew* not sure whether to replace the kettle at my expense or just perservere.
I'm so darn annoyed I really like a proper decent cuppa.

"when one interferes with receiving a decent simple cup of coffee..one might as well dabble with hell...."
how frustrating ...never heard of that kettle issue before I bought a new kettle a few months (more pricey than I usually pay for one) but I gotta say it is wonderful....when I get home I will share the info..brand etc (just in case you reach the point of buying a new one again ...which for you I hope not though) I ,too have had bad luck with kettles..(rusting issues though) |

| Definately share which one you have I think I'm going to have to succumb to another one and hope I don't have the same problem, because this is not doable long term....grrrrrr.... |

I would take it back along with a cup of tea in a flask and tell them it's not "fit for purpose" as it taints the water. If they argue tell them to try the tea for themselves. Failing that, they must have a staff kitchen, make them boil and taste the water. You could of course put on your stripey socks, and throw yourself on the floor, and skweem and skweem till you're sick. That should do it. |

If it keeps producing the gosh awful tasting stuff it is, I might just do what you suggest hun, I won't have to skweem till I'm sick I'll just take a sip from the flask that will have me upchucking * |

Apparently I may not have a leg to stand on as if I use distilled water and it's fine but using tap water either straight from the tap or filtered it's yuk then it's obviously the water, their words not mine, I pointed out it's said it's the chemicals in the water reacting with products they use in their kettle and they said then they have no control over that I need to take it up with the water company *grrr* I hate these people.. |

I use bottled water to drink on it's own and the rest is tap filtered but it still has a tast the filtered that is but I dont' see why I should have to buy extra bottled to boil just because this bloody kettle can't flaming cope the old one that conked out was fine well until it conked out that is.
I hate new things for this very reason....grrrr.
Good idea though hun but I don't think he will wear it |

| You know, Meg, I'd be very concerned if you can discern that significant a difference (and even if you couldn't) with the plastic. With everything being said about plastics and phtalates and carcinogens when heat and plastics interact, I'd be very leery about consumption. I'd march right back there with your stripey socks and fierce Louie and insist upon better. |

I have to say this is what is also very worrying I've spoken to the shop about it as well and they said it isn't faulty as far as them selling it so I need to speak to the manufacturer about it which I have and got absolutely no where, so I've decided I'm writing this off as a bad job and tossing the damn thing now I need to find a kettle I can confidently use, I'm looking at enamel need to research it though. |

| Morag, I make tea in my coffeemaker too now. That would totally ick me out too if it had a funky taste. I get the bare bones basic coffemakers without any frou and just recycle them as needed. Do you think they would be made differently enough material wise to solve the chemical reaction problem? |

Not sure but I'm looking into all options because its really not nice at all, and being told it will eventually go away does not fill me with confidence gosh only knows what I'm ingesting and I want a decent cuppa, I like to warm my teapot, pour my plain old boiling water (not chemical concoction) onto my tea and let it steep the appropriate time to get a nice crisp yummy cuppa, I am sooooo not happy, the one thing I do enjoy in life taken away by conglomerates who think interfering with the natural order of tea making is better!!!

oooooo. so you do it the right way...shouldve known...
I have a couple of teapots that are antiques, that I use fairly regularly... I am trying to figure out how to explain. They are the ceramic typical teapot, but have a ceramic "infuser" that sits in, so you can put your tea in it, then pour the hot water over, then when done can take it out so the tea is perfect in flavor...I love them sooo much, especially during the winter time!
but I use my old metal kettle on the stove to boil the bottled water. I can drink the water here at the new house, and use it for cooking, and it is fine, but to me, there is just an "after taste" if I am just boiling for tea. my hubby tells me I am imagining it... |

Glass kettles are great. I had one for over a year. They don't fare well when swept onto the floor by a Great Dane though. Hence only having it for a year. |
