I was just talking to another handler friend of mine who said, among other things, I need to purchase a straightening iron for my boy to use before showing. How common practice is this? I've never shown a puff before and I always just used a round brush and a blow drier to do my hairless boy's mane and rather sparingly since I like volume.

Thoughts?

A curly or very wavy coat is NOT a correct coat. This practice (and I KNOW it is done either by blowing straight or some other means) is really unethical IMO. I have a curly coated rescue puff and I adore him but I know that coat is not correct. However if I straightened his coat he would have a very lush HEAVY coat, which once again, is NOT correct according to the standard. If I were show/breeding myself, would be spending my time and money on getting a puff with a correct coat instead of thinking about grooming for the ring so to appear as to standard... Sorry for the rant, it is just kind of a peeve of mine - correct coats are just as important as good skin but I think it tends to go by the wayside in a hairless breed. Hopefully that is changing, except now we see more heavy coated dogs cuz it is perceived that is a "better" coat and one which wows the judges. Arrrrgh.

I know there are some curly coats out there on nice dogs from nice lines..... but only correct coats should be bred and bred for IMO.

It's extremely common. Even correct Puff coats often have a smidge of wave.

It's common becase even dogs with correct coats may not look as nice for a whole weekend or even a whole day without the hair being "sealed" by a flat iron. Some people literally live and die by their flat iron and can make a great coat look outstanding with one. I personally think a good blowdryer, that stays cool is the best item for the hair.

right her dogs are all correct coat, Derecho is 100% correct coat but if it dries wrong, just like human hair, it gets silly waves. Not kinks or curls, just natural waves from how it falls and dries.

So flat iron is a must? What protective sealing sprays does everyone recommend to use? I'd rather not see broken hair after applying heat, you know what I mean?

Also they were saying to brush it dry under a blow drier but then to got back through the top couple layers and straight iron in sections after I separate the coat. Sounds like hours of fun! Hooray 3 am show mornings for an 8 am call time!

Your blow dryer is your best friend and saves a huge amount of time. You need a high force blower. I use a metro blow dryer. Yo do not have to flat iron all of the hair, I never have .I flat ironed Brin's butt when she was a puppy because she wold sit on it and then it would stick straight up because it wasnt long enough to have the weight to pull it down. Also, if you have a lighter coat humidity will kill you quick, and a flat iron can be the only thing that will save you.

Some coats are flat ironed because they have to be, and yes those are incorrect, others are flat ironed because just like our hair, crap happens.

Actually I was wondering if anyone was using those straighteners like they show on TV (infomercials)? Just curious, yes I have thought about using one on Calvin just for fun! But not so sure it is worth it $$$ for fun.

The ones that spin around and iron it like a heated round brush? I've thought about it but my sister-in-law uses one of her hair, specifically on her bangs or to get it to roll under or flip out. It won't go completely straight.

My blow drier DEFINITELY is my best friend with my super SUPER thick furnished boy (Ogou) and I've used it on a few Yorkies when I was helping friends groom. Maybe the flat iron is one of those tricks they don't like to share? LOL! I'll definitely pick up a better brand ceramic one and have a play on Derecho and will post pictures of one side ironed and one side not. Will be good practice for him anyway to make him learn not to be a wiggle butt!

If you have a ceramic one give it a try! They aren't that damaging as long as you don't do it very often and if you spray it first its really not bad. It'd look really pretty I am sure!

Most people iron, not to straighten a poor coat, but to get it to lay flat. If Kenny's not ironed he's more puffy & it just doesn't look as good. You have to "play" the game if you want to win, sad but true with everything, grooming, politics etc. I'm happy Kenny is #1 crested in Canada, now I have to decide if I want to pay the $$ to advertise that or just be happy with myself. It's all about the game Wink

Attached is a pic of Kenny not ironed ... he is ironed in my signature pic.

Kenny is GORGEOUS ironed or not. Personally? I've always advertised my dogs. Ogou has been in the AKC Chronicle a few times and Derecho will be in the Chronicle and possibly in that magazine associated with the CKC (I forget the name, my brain is busy coding websites so I'm thinking in code not English LOL!) as a "look who's coming out" ad. To me it's worth the money and it's fun. I don't have to pay a designer to do the ads because I do them myself with my handy dandy graphic design and print knowledge (working for an advertising firm will do that to you) so I just pay the page costs to the magazines. It's always nice having a copy of the issue your baby is in for memory's sake.

If you'd like I can have a play with Kenny photos and info and do a mock up design? He's truly STUNNING!

The mag assoc with CKC is Dogs in Canada. Normally show people advertise in Canine Review, since all the judges get a free copy (so naturally you want the judges to see your dog). They do the ad for me if I do a full page, I just send pics. I know they have a top dogs issue, so I'll have to look into it - I'm still undecided. I could pay a few enty fees with the money I'd spend on the ad .....

Kenny's coat is TO DIE FOR. He is so beautiful, in every photo I see of him, even playing in the yard.

I bought a very small, adjustable heat flat iron and with the help of a friend have used in on my pet boys around their faces so that I could trim their hair on an angle. Because they both have wavy hair I could not get a good even trim. I used in on the lowest heat and very carefully and it helped. Just a tip for pet owners who like to trim around the face.

a great product to use on hair being straightened by any heat is called Biosilk..a small amount goes a long way. Its a vitamin E formula to prevent flyaways..static and breakage. Also prevents the dryness that comes with using heat. The company makes a dog product that is the exact same thing as the human product called..Pet Silk.. I hope it isn't a issue posting the name of the product on here..
