I have a little rescue who is 8 weeks and wasn't microchipped. There are multiple parenting poissibilities because the breeder is deceased. Does anyone know anything about DNA testing for pedigree?

You can probably find out some info on it on the AKC website but the parents DNA would have to be on file with AKC.
Microchipping would only identify the owner and give contact info so the dog could be returned if lost, not tell parentage.

I am sure for a fee you could submit swabs of all the possibilities and from your own pup and see who the parents were from a commercial lab as well but it could be very pricey.

Probably the most accurate test out there right now that covers a multitude of breeds, is the Wisdom Panel. Its done with a blood sample.

Depends on your Vet, but the testing can run from about $125-160 or so.

It's geared more toward mixed breeds, rather than checking on supposedly purebred dogs. You could contact the company and see where they're at as far as testing purebreds. I know they were researching into that.

If you know the breeder the dog was from you might be able to contact the family and see if the breeder had kept records of the mating before their passing. If you approach it carefully they might be willing to help you out especially if there could be AKC registration papers involved.

Dogs can be dna'd just like humans can. There would need to be a sample from the pups as well as all the possible parents. It can get a bit expensive....

When it comes to determining the dogs actual parents, it gets to be a very expensive proposition, especially if the breeder is deceased.

IF you want the dog registered, then this is the only way to do it, and it will be very expensive.

Again...with the breeder being dead, its a whole new ball game.

First they need DNA of the dam, and all possible Sires, along with the puppies.

IF any AKC registration papers were issued, then, if you, as an owner have genuine concernes about the accuracy of those papers, then the AKC can begin proceedings to get things verified. HOWEVER...it costs about 600$ per invesigation, and you are required to put that money up front as it will cover the cost of testing the dogs unless the breeder is complaint and does it themselves.

Its very complicated.

I know someone with an IG that is doing this right now. She has gotten several variations on the parentage of her dog from the breeder, and finally contacted the AKC because the papers she got, did not match what she was told, nor what was stated on the web listing for the dog. The AKC is doing an investigation in this case because she has so much documentation to back up what she is saying.

Regardless, if this is just a pet, and your going to spay/neuter, and the breeder is gone, then there is very little for you to gain by requesting DNA to verify parentage...and it woudl be a substantial financial investment.

OMG, I can't believe the AKC is charging that much! My first Border Collie pup, Matisse, had to be DNA profiled at the request of the Kennel Club because the breeder was accused of registering pups to the wrong parents. This was all done at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, and yes, they needed DNA from all possible parents, but this was all done for the princely sum of £10 per dog!

PS - I've just checked on the KC website, and they charge £15 now. I know that there's an exchange rate, but a bit different to $600!

PPS - Matisse was registered to the correct parents all along!!!
