Our almost 4 year old male, powder puff started having seizures earlier this year. He was put on phenobarbital. Has had some seizures since. Our Vet recommended Bailey have a bile acid survey test. He was given a very high protein food & they take blood pre & post to check how is liver is metabolizing.
It came back elevated & suspect portal shunt. So he is now on lactulose, amoxicillin in addition to phenobarbital along with a special renal modified dog food. He is being referred to a specialist for an ultrasound to see if he is a candidate for surgery. Are you familiar with this? Porto systemic shunt (PSS).
We are heart broken. 💔😔

This is an update/recap- He started having more seizures so our Vet did a Bile Acid Study Test & his levels were a little high so she suspected portal shunt disorder. He was put on lactulose, renal modified diet& increased his phenobarbital. He really started to perk up & was like a new dog. Prior to this he was getting very sluggish, was dragging behind on short walks, etc. A thyroid level was done which was normal. My Vet referred us to a specialist at the Metropolitan Hosp. The Vet there did a thorough exam, X-ray, ultrasound & blood work. All came back normal so no portal shunt issue- thank goodness. He could have some type of liver issue (not exactly sure what) but for now we are keeping him on phenobarbital, renal diet & lactulose. What a difference in him- so much more energy. ❤
